dn9:34.1 There are some ascetics and brahmins who have this doctrine and view:
dn9:34.2 ‘The self is absolutely happy and free of disease after death.’
dn9:34.3 I go up to them and say,
dn9:34.4 ‘Is it really true that this is the venerables’ view?’
dn9:34.6 And they answer, ‘Yes’.
dn9:34.7 I say to them,
dn9:34.8 ‘But do you meditate knowing and seeing an absolutely happy world?’
dn9:34.9 Asked this, they say, ‘No.’
dn9:34.10 I say to them,
dn9:34.11 ‘But have you perceived an absolutely happy self for a single day or night, or even half a day or night?’
dn9:34.12 Asked this, they say, ‘No.’
dn9:34.13 I say to them,
dn9:34.14 ‘But do you know
dn9:34.15 a path and a practice to realize an absolutely happy world?’
dn9:34.16 Asked this, they say, ‘No.’
dn9:34.17 I say to them,
dn9:34.18 ‘But have you ever heard the voice of the deities reborn in an absolutely happy world saying,
dn9:34.19 “Practice well, good fellows, practice directly so as to realize an absolutely happy world.
dn9:34.20 For this is how we practiced, and we were reborn in an absolutely happy world”?’
dn9:34.21 Asked this, they say, ‘No.’
dn9:34.22 What do you think, Poṭṭhapāda?
dn9:34.23 This being so, doesn’t what they say turn out to have no demonstrable basis?”
dn9:34.24 “Clearly that’s the case, sir.”
