dn29:24.1 It’s possible that wanderers of other religions might say,
dn29:24.2 ‘The ascetics who follow the Sakyan live indulging in pleasure in these four ways.’
dn29:24.3 They should be told, ‘Not so!’
dn29:24.4 It isn’t right to say that about you; it misrepresents you with an untruth.
dn29:24.5 Cunda, these four kinds of indulgence in pleasure lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
dn29:24.6 What four?
dn29:24.7 It’s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.
dn29:24.8 This is the first kind of indulgence in pleasure.
dn29:24.9 Furthermore, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, a mendicant enters and remains in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.
dn29:24.10 This is the second kind of indulgence in pleasure.
dn29:24.11 Furthermore, with the fading away of rapture, a mendicant enters and remains in the third absorption. They meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, experiencing for themselves the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’
dn29:24.12 This is the third kind of indulgence in pleasure.
dn29:24.13 Furthermore, with the giving up of pleasure and pain and the disappearance of former happiness and sadness, a mendicant enters and remains in the fourth absorption. It is without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.
dn29:24.14 This is the fourth kind of indulgence in pleasure.
dn29:24.15 These are the four kinds of indulgence in pleasure which lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
dn29:24.16 It’s possible that wanderers of other religions might say,
dn29:24.17 ‘The ascetics who follow the Sakyan live indulging in pleasure in these four ways.’
dn29:24.18 They should be told, ‘Exactly so!’
dn29:24.19 It’s right to say that about you; it doesn’t misrepresent you with an untruth.
