dn23:12.1 “Even though the worthy Kassapa says this, still I think that
dn23:12.2 there is no afterlife.”
dn23:12.3 “Can you prove it?”
dn23:12.4 “I can.”
dn23:12.5 “How, exactly, chieftain?”
dn23:12.6 “Well, I see ascetics and brahmins who are ethical, of good character, who want to live and don’t want to die, who want to be happy and recoil from pain.
dn23:12.7 I think to myself,
dn23:12.8 ‘If those ascetics and brahmins knew that
dn23:12.9 things were going to be better for them after death,
dn23:12.10 they’d drink poison, take their lives, hang themselves, or throw themselves off a cliff.
dn23:12.11 They mustn’t know that
dn23:12.12 things are going to be better for them after death. That’s why they are ethical, of good character, wanting to live and not wanting to die, wanting to be happy and recoiling from pain.’
dn23:12.13 This is the method by which I prove that
dn23:12.14 there is no afterlife.”
