Dalam Mahāsatipaṭṭhānasutta, Sang Buddha membabarkan empat penegakan perhatian (satipaṭṭhāna) sebagai jalan tunggal menuju pemurnian batin dan realisasi Nibbāna. Sutta ini menguraikan secara terperinci cara merenungkan tubuh, perasaan, pikiran, dan fenomena-fenomena (dhamma) dengan penuh kesadaran. dn22:18.1 And what is the noble truth of suffering?

dn22:18.2 Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; being coupled with the disliked is suffering; separation from the liked is suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.

dn22:18.4 The rebirth, inception, conception, regeneration, manifestation of the aggregates, and acquisition of the sense fields of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

dn22:18.7 The old age, decrepitude, broken teeth, grey hair, wrinkly skin, diminished vitality, and failing faculties of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

dn22:18.10 The passing away, passing on, disintegration, demise, mortality, death, decease, breaking up of the aggregates, laying to rest of the corpse, and cutting off of the life faculty of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.

dn22:18.13 The sorrow, sorrowing, state of sorrow, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.

dn22:18.16 The wail, lament, wailing, lamenting, state of wailing and lamentation in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.

dn22:18.19 Physical pain, physical unpleasantness, the painful, unpleasant feeling that’s born from physical contact.

dn22:18.29 this is what is meant by ‘being coupled with the disliked is suffering’.

dn22:18.30 And what is meant by ‘separation from the liked is suffering’?

dn22:18.31 There are sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and ideas, which are likable, desirable, and agreeable. And there are those who want to help, benefit, comfort, and protect you: mother and father, brother and sister, friends and colleagues, relatives and kin. The division from these, the disconnection, segregation, and parting from them:

dn22:18.32 this is what is meant by ‘separation from the liked is suffering’.

dn22:18.33 And what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’?

dn22:18.34 In sentient beings who are liable to be reborn, such a wish arises:

dn22:18.35 ‘Oh, if only we were not liable to be reborn! If only rebirth would not come to us!’

dn22:18.37 This is what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’.

dn22:18.38 In sentient beings who are liable to grow old …

dn22:18.45 experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not liable to experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress! If only sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress would not come to us!’

dn22:18.47 This is what is meant by ‘not getting what you wish for is suffering’.

dn22:18.48 And what is meant by ‘in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering’?
