sn18.11:1.1 So I have heard.
sn18.11:1.2 At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī.
sn18.11:1.3 Then Venerable Rāhula went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
sn18.11:1.4 “What do you think, Rāhula?
sn18.11:1.5 Is the eye permanent or impermanent?”
sn18.11:1.6 “Impermanent, sir.”
sn18.11:1.7 “But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”
sn18.11:1.8 “Suffering, sir.”
sn18.11:1.9 “But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:
sn18.11:1.10 ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”
sn18.11:1.11 “No, sir.”
sn18.11:1.12 “… the ear …
sn18.11:1.13 the nose …
sn18.11:1.14 the tongue …
sn18.11:1.15 the body …
sn18.11:1.16 Is the mind permanent or impermanent?”
sn18.11:1.17 “Impermanent, sir.”
sn18.11:1.18 “But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”
sn18.11:1.19 “Suffering, sir.”
sn18.11:1.20 “But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:
sn18.11:1.21 ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”
sn18.11:1.22 “No, sir.”
sn18.11:1.23 “Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, the ear, the nose, the tongue, the body, and the mind.
sn18.11:1.24 Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
sn18.11:1.25 They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’”
sn18.11:1.26 (The ten discourses of this series should be told in full the same way.)
