Tokoh, tempat, dan gagasan utamanya

Brahmana tua Brahmāyu mengirim muridnya memeriksa tiga puluh dua ciri manusia agung pada tubuh Buddha. Setelah melihat perilaku dan mendengar ajaran-Nya, Brahmāyu sendiri datang, memperoleh keyakinan, dan menerima pengajaran bertahap. Inilah Brahmāyu Sutta.

Sinopsis singkat

Brahmana tua Brahmāyu mendengar bahwa Buddha sedang melakukan perjalanan dan mengutus muridnya, Uttara, untuk memeriksa apakah Sang Buddha benar-benar memiliki tanda-tanda manusia agung. Uttara mengikuti Buddha selama berbulan-bulan, mengamati tubuh, cara berjalan, duduk, makan, berbicara dan mengajar. Setelah menerima laporan yang sangat rinci, Brahmāyu sendiri datang menemui Buddha. Pertemuan itu mengubah pemeriksaan tanda-tanda lahiriah menjadi keyakinan langsung: Brahmāyu bersujud, mendengar ajaran bertahap tentang kemurahan hati, sila, surga, bahaya kenikmatan indria dan pelepasan, lalu menerima penjelasan Empat Kebenaran Mulia.
